Sand ‘n’ Surf afghan

Sand ‘n’ Surf is a Granny Square Blanket; my current project. There are 12 squares total with a 4 inch border all around. It is a lovely blanket. Xavier first asked if the blanket was for his baby-doll (at Christmas I made one for him). I told him it was going to be bigger.  About 5 minutes later he came back, leaned against me, watching me  crochet and asked, “Is it a BIG BOY blanket?” I nodded and told him I did not know who was going to use it. He sighed and said, “I like that hook thingy.” He has watched me carefully and he has put squares side by side as if trying to see what it is going to look like.

I am using two Red Heart® Super Saver® colors and two Red Heart® Soft® colors. Even though their hand is different they work well together. However, I have found the darker Super Saver skeins are stiff and the lighter is softer and handles better. At first I thought it was a fluke , a single skein with the problem but it wasn’t just the one. The second skein was just as stiff and unyielding. The yarn does soften when worked.

When I work Granny Squares my habit is to create one entire square to organize the pattern, then I work each subsequent square one color at a time. I have completed most of the last 11. I have only one day’s work to finish all the squares. Below there is the photo of the completed square.

  • What is needed.
  • 2 skeins each Red Heart® Super Saver® A: Buff (Chamois or Bufalo) D: Coffee (Cafe).
  • 3 skeins each Red Heart® Soft® B: Teal C: Waterscape.
  • 5.50 mm crochet hook (size I).
  • Make twelve squares (approx. 17″ square).
  • Notes:
  • Cluster =3  hdc (alt. ch 3 and 2 hdc)
  • Corner = 1 cluster, ch 3 1 cluster
  • Weave ends in as you go.

To make a square;

Color A, ch 4 and sl st to form a circle;

row 1; ch 3 into circle hdc 2 times (first  cluster completed) ch 3. *work 3 hdc then ch  3 (second cluster done)* repeat from * to * 2 more times ; sl st into ch 3 of first cluster. (total clusters = 4).

row 2; ch 3 hdc 2 times = 1 cluster, ch 3, second cluster for corner, *ch 1, cluster, ch 3, cluster, ch 1* from * to * 2 more times; sl st into ch 1. (total clusters = 8).

row 3, color B  (for one row) ch 3, hdc 2 times = one cluster, * ch 1,  cluster, ch 3, cluster, ch 1, cluster, ch 1,* from * to * 2 more times; sl st into ch 1 (total clusters = 12).

row 4;  color D, (for two rows) ch 3, hdc 2 times = 1 cluster, * ch 1, cluster, ch 1, corner, ch 1, cluster, ch 1 cluster, ch 1, from * to * 2 more times; sl st into ch 1 (total clusters = 18).

row 5; color D, total clusters = 22.

I am very pleased with the color combination and the overall look of the finished project.
