Tribute to my Mom! I learned from the best!

Tribute to my mother!

My mom tells a story about an event from my childhood. We were in a store, my Father had two of us by the hand and Mom was pushing a stroller. We were all wearing matching clothes. I think I remember the clothes, they were small green and white checked. My brother and Father had shirts, Mom was wearing a maternity smock and I had a dress. At any rate, as the story goes…In the store two older women were walking by (from behind) and commenting about the cuteness until they walked around and spied mom’s swollen belly and the stroller. Mom says they gasped!

The story is more about the clothes, at least for me it is. Mom sewed for us even though there were five of us. I remember her sewing machine desk and watching her sew. I really have no idea how old I was in the memories.

Well, Mom taught me to sew. I was in fourth grade, we were living in Texas and my mom assisted me or I assisted her make a black skirt for me. During this time of my life I was “chunky” and felt self-conscience. The skirt was either gathered or pleated, had a wide waistband and the length was on the short side. The fact that we made a skirt, even though I was fat, helped me feel a little better about myself.

My sister Darla and I used scraps of fabric to create clothes for our trolls and our dolls. That same Christmas was when I received my first sewing kit.

In seventh grade was my first Home Economics class. My first project was a pillow, it had a zipper and trim. The color was green with purple/white/green print. The trim was inset. It was purple balls. I had that pillow until my daughter picked all of the balls off of it and broke the zipper.  That pillow lasted more than a decade!

That class was the beginning of my sewing clothes for myself. I was lucky enough to have Home Economics again in the ninth grade. Since then I have taken many classes and have done custom sewing for many people. Just think, the idea for my business began when I was just a wee tike!

In 1978 my daughter was born. Mom came to visit me after I left the hospital. She teased me about the bright colored fabrics I selected to make various baby accessories for the bassinet etc.

I wanted to learn to Crochet and make a blanket for Natelee. I knew Mom had learned to make Granny Squares when I was a teenager. We purchased yarn and a hook. She told me I needed to learn to read a pattern before beginning. Mom said, “that way you will be able to crochet anything. I crocheted large Granny Squares, I forget the colors, and finished the blanket during her visit. That was just the beginning.

Because my Mom cared enough to pass down these skills I have opened, Designs By Cathy; Raggz2Baggz! I am very proud.

Thank you Mom, I love You!!
